BHUK Refereeing learning from USA Ball Hockey - 4 April 2021
Since taking over as Head of Refereeing, I’ve tried to use the current pause in play to learn as much as I can.  A lot of the problems I feel need addressing within BHUK refereeing have aligned with the recent survey, which is a good starting point.

To go along with this, a couple of weekends ago, I was fortunate enough to attend one of USA Ball Hockey’s refereeing training seminars.  This was a fantastic way to see how one of the leading nations in world ball hockey is approaching the training of their referees.

Cory Herschk (Director of Hockey Operations) invited me along and set the tone of the session.  Cory is so enthusiastic for the sport and despite a midnight start in the UK, set a very positive and engaging tone.

Then, it was over to Michael Wahbi (Referee-In-Chief), assisted by Trevor Jarvis (Senior Official on the Referee Technical Committee), to deliver a fantastic session of training.

Thankfully many of the themes aligned to the way we approach officiating in the UK, however their way of explaining why things need to happen in certain ways has inspired me when creating a training programme of our own for BHUK.

Keep your eyes out for when we launch BHUK Referee Training sessions - this is part of our commitment to train and support our officials in the coming months.  Work has been going ahead behind this scenes to create this and I hope this can be rolled out soon.

Thanks,

Rob Pacey

Head of Refereeing
